The Alure of Dior
The Christian Dior brand has always broken the fashion mold with bold and powerful designs. Christian Dior debuted his first collection in 1947 which was coined the “New Look,” and came with structured silhouettes, cinched waists and billowy, shorter shirts. The designs were revolutionary and make the brand one of the most sought after in the world. Stars such as Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner wanted to be adored with this New Look.
In 1955, a young 19-year-old named Yves Saint Laurant started working with Christian Dior and impressed him so much that he was named Dior’s successor after his death in 1957. Saint Laurant carried on Dior’s Legacy and advanced his designs with a softer silhouette.
Eyes were again focused on the Dior brand in the late 1990s with the arrival of John Galliano as creative director. Every star wanted to be dressed by Galliano, including Princess Diana. Her go-to bag was later dubbed, with her blessing, the Lady Dior. He also introduced the instantly popular Saddle Handbag.
After Galliano’s departure in 2011, Raf Simons took over the designs, taking the brand back to its feminine roots with classic styles.
In 2016, the brand made history with the introduction of the first female artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri.
