DESCRIPTION

Few icons are as big as “Birkin”. The brand’s notoriously hard to secure bag and highly collectible handbag is named after the French actress and singer Jane Birkin. Birkin had been known for carrying a unique handbag, a Portuguese fisherman’s basket, which she purchased while on vacation. She styled the basket with everything from jeans to evening gowns and wore it whether it coordinated with her outfit, the season or the occasion.

In 1981, Birkin was on a flight from Paris to London and the contents of her bag onto the floor. A few days earlier, her basket had been destroyed in an accident and she was forced to fly with a smaller bag. Sitting next to her on this flight was the then CEO of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas. Seeing her struggle to keep items in her bag, Dumas and Birkin struck up a conversation about what type of bag she needed. Dumas left the flight with a mission to design for Birkin a medium-sized bag that would keep a women’s belongings safe and stylish – and the iconic Birkin bag was born.

The Hermes Birkin has become one of the most desired handbags in the world. Crafted by one highly trained artisan and taking up to 24 hours to produce, every piece of leather and hardware is greatly scrutinized to ensure perfection. Birkin handbags outperformed both gold and the S&P 500 stocks over the past 35 years with an annual return of 14.2%. Hermes will be lowering their production numbers of the handbag, further fueling the collectability of the handbags.

Popularity of red Hermes Birkin’s exploded after being featured on Season four of Sex and the City, which the Hermes SA perfectly said, “its not a bag, It’s a Birkin.”
